Settling in to the japanese way of life

The Settling in Process.

Since I have moved to Japan, I have learned and experienced new things pretty much everyday. But some of these are more memorable than others which I want to highlight.

  • Japanese Bathing
Due to visiting Japan before I wasn't completely overwhelmed by the Japanese way of washing. In summary, you have a bath at night after a hard days work. Rather than the British routine of early morning showers. ( which I really miss).
Another experience is if you visit a Japanese traditional hotel which contains a spa of sorts. The sex's go to different spas as you must be completely naked when in the bathing area. That right, for us prudent westerners  it can be a bewildering experience. Firstly you must clean yourself in one of the open cubicles before entering the spa. Once you are all clean and polished you can then pick which spa bath you want to be in. I went to the outside bath. It was extremely hot but late at night with a clear sky, is one of the most relaxing places you can be.

  • The ruddy SLIPPERS!!
So in a Japanese house there are numerous slippers for different rooms. Also when you enter a room such as the living area, you must remember to take your slippers off before entering. It may seem simple but to me it has been a constant annoyance. My aunt kindly just laughs at me and tells me off.

  • The Robotic Toilets
While I was on a road trip we stopped off at a service area. I did not expect at this simple service area to have one of the most elaborate toilet areas I had ever seen. When entering the toilet zone there is a massive screen highlighting which toilet is in use. So effieceint, I mean if you need to go you need to go, right. However once seated on these lovely clean toilets you notice you are surrounded by what seems a computer lab. The fear came. What button is FLUSH! I found a button for music, seat temperature, cleaning your bum, cleaning your ahem, lighting and so on.
